Fooooood: Boston

I Looooooooove great restaurants.
Here are a few in the boston area that top my list:

Oishi- Probably the best sushi rolls and presentations I have seen. Great environment.
Cambridge 1- Yummy thin crust pizza, salads, and wines. Interior designed by some GSD kids.
Helmands- Great Afganistan food!!! Dishes I have never herd of, but taste incredible.
East Coast Grill- Great lively environment and seafood. Also some great BBQ.
Bob and Timmys- By far my favorite pizza. Thin, simple, lots of selection, great environment, and a hidden gem. Providence, RI
Cuchi Cuchi- Tapas, Tapas, Sangria...a bit pricy, but interesting space.
Koreana- Yummy BBQ and a variety of other Korean dishes. Great space for a group of friends to relax and have fun.
Enormous Room- This is more of a lounge, with a bar, and a few simple, but delightly dishes. Lively music and large rugs to lay down on make this a hotspot for college kids.
Craige Street Bistro- Unbelievable food with wine combinations and a cozy environment. Be prepared to pay a bit more here.
Tamarind Bay- Spice, Spice, Spice.....a refreshing and cozy space with great indian food.

BostonChefs- a great resource of Boston area restaurants. Has pictures, menus, etc.

A few I have not tried, but am craving to go:

BlueGinger (chef Ming, an Iron Chef)
Oleana- Many people say this is the best!
Dali's- Fun tapas, spicy environment!
Spire - Fancy, Bold, pricey.
Midwest Grill- Brazillian BBQ

Tom Friedman

Tom has some super cool projects dealing with everyday items. Above is a sculpture he made with probably a million toothpicks. I've seen his work in the past, but recently went to the ecstasy exhibit in LA and saw a piece by him which just made me laugh in a good way. It was a piece titled something like, "piece of paper I stared at for 1000 hours". It was simply a piece of paper framed nicely behind a piece of glass, but the idea behind the piece is "what is art". Tom stared at this exact piece of paper for 1000 hours. Is this piece of paper "art" or is that up to the observer/artist.

Toms other work (if any of you know of a better site with his work, please link)

Mohammed Bah Abba "pot-in-pot" cooling device

"Northern Nigeria is an impoverished region where people in rural communities eke out a living from subsistence farming. With no electricity, and therefore no refrigeration, perishable foods spoil within days. Such spoilage causes disease and loss of income for needy farmers, who are forced to sell their produce daily. Nigerian teacher Mohammed Bah Abba was motivated by his concern for the rural poor and by his interest in indigenous African technology to seek a practical, local solution to these problems. His extremely simple and inexpensive earthenware "pot-in-pot" cooling device, based on a principle of physics already known in ancient Egypt, is revolutionising lives in this semi-desert area."

Projects like this amaze me. A simple product with a huge impact for millions of people. It also makes me realaize how much we rely on electricuty in our ever so tech-centric lives.

Yves Behar has created a stunning watch for the mini_collection. The display has a landscape, portrait, and data mode. It's a one size fits all, but it fits me fine, so no complaints on my end. I almost like looking at it more than wearing it.

Soft Magnets

I got my hands on these fabuliciously cool soft magnets by GELTEC. When someone talks to you about magnets, you think about hard pieces of metal, but thees little suckers are as soft as gummi bears. Once you get these in your hands, it's hard to let go...

Air Zooka!!

If you want some fun in the office, get an Air Zooka. This is one of the most surprising little science toys you'll get out there. This lil bucket hurls an invisible ball of air at any target. If your good, you can pin point targets at up to 20 feet and really surprise people. It feels like a ghost punching you. Its the best $15 you'll ever spend. ZeroToys also has a few other little gadget toys that are fun. Check them out!

Name Voyager

Have you ever wondered how popular your name was as a baby? Name voyager creates a visual diagram of baby name populations in the past 100+ years. Its interesting to see how some names just boom certain years..perhaps due to a rock star, movie, song, movement, etc.
Also reminds me of this discussion I had with a friend questioning the social implications of a persons life based on their childhood names. If any of you have info on this, please comment.
Anyhow, give it a try, type in your name, and watch the dynamic diagram flow.

A fun VW, VERDIER

What would you do if you could go all out with your classic VW van? Well these guys turned it into a super modular unit with a few surprises here and there. I'm pretty sure this is just a concept, but the site comes along with some nice video renderings and music.

Vik Muniz

Vik muniz is a extremely fun artist with some bewildering projects. The picture above is him drawing clouds in the sky, with those exhaust stunt planes. He's got drawings made from wires, finger paintings using sugar, crop drawings from the sky, and a bunch of other projects that just make you smile. I first met him at the TED conference and have been following his work since. Go to his pages and listern to his commentaries about his work.

Wooden Mirror

Daniel Rozins Wooden Mirror magically reflects your own pixelated image back to you by programming wooden chips to angel at different levels based on the amount of light you are reflecting. This is one of those "physical pixelation" projects that I like sooooo much. I had the chance to intereact with it and it's uber-tastic. In fact, it's actually hard to tell what the image is since your so close to it, but the lovely part is the nostalgic flickering of wooden panels playing an orchestrated tune based on your movements. Sounds kind of like those train old school train schedule ticker panels.

LoftCube

Loftcube is a pretty sweet project done by Werner Aisslinger. The idea behind the Loftcube is a portable customized living space that stations on top of roofdecks with unbelievable views. There are a bunch of really beautiful elements within this space that are worth checking out. (personally I liked the bathroom section) The site has a pretty nice presentation along with some chill happening music.

Dry Liquid! Novec 1230(sapphire)

Sapphire is an uberliciously new liquid designed to fight fires, without killing the electronics. It's high tension structure beads off of any surface pretty much making it a dry liquid . You can sink your laptop in a pool of this liquid and type away with no worries. I'd love to have a big pool of this stuff, go swimming in it with my cloths on, walk out, let it all bead off in a few seconds, and continue on with the same cloths....anyhow, I'm still trying to get my hands on this stuff, but apparently you have to be affiliated with the fire department to order it.

Chit Chat

Chit Chat is a scruptiously delicious and whimsical project by Steven Blyth and Matty Sallin. Each seat in a restaurant is connected to a microphone and projector. The Microphone takes your voice as infomation to display words such as "blah blah , BLAH, ba blah, la la." The size, speed, color, and words are based on your conversation with the person next to you. Basically, your voice becomes the ambient environment in the space surrounding you in a non-obtrusive manor. HOW SWEEEEET is this project. It's like living in a comic book but living in reality at the same time. yeahyea! Watch the videos.

All Season Shirt!

The "All season shirt" concept is uber delicioulsy cool and geeky in some designer way. It's one shirt that functions both as long and short sleeve on the same shirt. Feeling hot, no worries, just tuck your arms in like a turtle, rotate your shirt a few degrees, and extend your arms back out the short sleeves. Whala! Now the long sleeves are just ornamental designs dangling off your chest. HOW COOL!!!!
Bytrico has a bunch of other cool shirts as well. If your in Tokyo, ya gotsta stop by and check them out. They are a little pricy, but I dont know anywhere else that you can find unique shirts like these.

Hyper Sonic Sound

Hyper Sonic Sound, HSS, are uber cool directional speakers invented by Woody Norris. What are they, well, basically, if I stuck a flashlight in front of the speaker, only people within the lights cone would be able to hear what I was broadcasting. It's the strangest feeling. First you hear it, then you dont . The other wow factor is you cant tell which direction the sound is coming from. I don't quite understand how it works, but I've had the chance to play with and have never seen or heard anything like it. When someone points the speaker at you, it sounds like there's a speaker inside of you, playing through your lungs or sum something. It's mad weird!!!!! but uber cooool!
There's another invention like it called the audiospotlight done by a MIT graduate. Anyhow, I'm not sure what the future of sound is, but this is for sure one revolutionary step for it.

TED Conference

The TED Conference(Technology, Entertainment, Design) is perhaps the most unbelievable gathering of mind-provoking, astonishing, inspirational, diverse, and life changing conferences I have ever been to. I could rant on for pages about it, but check out their webpage and look at the speakers list and imagine if all the attendees were just as amazzzzing. Only about 1000 people are invited each year. I've been extremely fortunate to work for and attend the conference since 2003. The TED conference is a mind-boggling experience taken place in Monterey CA each year.

Google Earth!! What more can I say. This is an Amazzzing program. I used it before Google owned it (Keyhole) and have been hooked ever since. I cant stress how much I love this program. I rarely use google maps anymore. There are a ton of great features, and the list will only get better, though, I was dissapointed that google got rid of the vectored abilities that keyhole allowed.

DOWNLOAD IT, USE IT, and travel around the world within a few twitches of your finger. You'll be amazed, hooked, and looking up everything.

ElekTex

ElekTex is one of the pioneers in electronic fabrics. I have a real soft spot for their technology because I'm getting tired of plastic and metal tech products. There's something about soft electronics that's soooo freakin cool.
Personally, I think softer electronics will bring a nostalgic sense and emotional value that most electronics don't have. I mean, seriously, you throw away cell phones, laptops, tv's, mp3 players yearly, but there's something about those old t-shirts, blankets, teddy bears, baseballs, and other such soft items that easily attach to you.
